Show your colours during your job interview
Research among managers and HR officers has shown that the colour you wear contributes to how you come across. It may seem obvious, but conservative colours seem the safest. But what exactly does it say?
- Black = leadership. Perhaps a distant colour, but it's also a colour that radiates seriousness, and thus ensures you're taken seriously.
- Blue = team player. Blue is the best colour for your interview. It radiates trust and confidence. It's even been proven to increase your chance of a job. Going for a sales role? Then choose blue!
- Grey = analytical. Grey communicates a degree of independence or isolation. That's not a problem if you compensate for it with your own confidence. Do you get nervous rather quickly? Then don't choose grey. But for certain (IT) roles, definitely the right choice, because it shows that you work independently and are also able to solve problems on your own
- White = organised. Go for not too much distraction and opt for a white shirt. But do wear it well, because it can also come across as boring. So don't take your jacket off too quickly. Why organised? If there were chaos in your life, there would surely be a stain to see…
- Red = passion and power. Going for a senior role? Allowed to stand out? Then choose a red tie. With it, you're sure to make an impression. It also stands for courage and energy. So do check carefully whether it suits the role.
- Green, yellow, orange and purple = creative. These striking colours can communicate that you're a fun person who likes to attract attention. Not entirely appropriate during a job interview (except perhaps at an advertising agency?). Better to leave them aside, then.
