What is lyocell?

Lyocell, also known under the brand name Tencel, is a textile fibre made from wood pulp. It therefore has a lot in common with viscose, but the main difference lies in production: fewer harsh chemicals are involved, which makes lyocell more environmentally friendly to produce. Within men's fashion the fabric is growing in popularity thanks to that combination of sustainability, comfort and versatility.

What kind of fabric is lyocell?

Lyocell is a semi-synthetic fibre, made from cellulose from the wood pulp of mainly eucalyptus or beech trees. That cellulose is treated with a solvent so that fibres can be spun from it. The crucial difference from viscose is that this happens in a closed system, in which the chemicals are captured and reused instead of discharged. In addition, the wood largely comes from sustainably managed forests.

What are the advantages of lyocell?

Lyocell drapes smoothly around your body and is even softer than viscose. The fabric breathes well and wicks moisture away efficiently, so it dries quickly and is excellently suited to hot summer days or warm climates. Lyocell also has a natural elasticity and creases less easily than viscose. No wonder the fabric is often used for shirts and T-shirts.

What are the disadvantages of lyocell?

Despite all the advantages, lyocell can start to pill or fluff over time. It is also prone to shrinking, so do not wash it hotter than 30 degrees and use the delicates programme. Also avoid direct sunlight when drying to prevent colour fading. And although the raw material is natural, the chemical treatment means it is not a fully natural product.
