What is a tuxedo shirt
A tuxedo shirt, or dress shirt, is a white shirt that you wear exclusively under a tuxedo. You recognise the traditional version by the wing collar: an upright collar with points folded outwards, cut so that your black bow tie stays neatly in place. Nowadays you also see other stylish collars, such as the cutaway.
How do you recognise a good tuxedo shirt?
Most models have a concealed button placket, where the buttons disappear behind a strip of fabric so that the front looks smooth. The sleeves end in double cuffs, which you fasten with cufflinks instead of ordinary buttons. A good tuxedo shirt is made of high-quality cotton, such as Egyptian cotton, and finished with mother-of-pearl buttons. On the classic version the front is pleated, known as plissé; on modern variants it is smooth.
